Surface Hardening Techniques of P/M Titanium Alloys

Low hardness and poor wear resistance constrain the practical applications of titanium alloys,especially for those made by P/M.Surface hardening technique is one of the effective means to enhance the surface properties of P/M Ti alloys.Several typical surface hardening techniques for improving surface hardness and abrasion resis-tance of titanium alloys are reviewed here,including laser surface modification,laser cladding coating,micro-arc oxidation,ion implantation,double glow plasma surface alloying and high frequency induction treatment,etc.The cha-racteristic of each technique and the structure and properties of the enhanced surfaces by these techniques are discussed.Recently,the National Academy of Science of Ukraine recommends the water-quench technique of titanium alloys in N2 atmosphere,which is a new trend of surface hardening of titanium alloys.
