Investigations of Mechanical and Shielding Properties of Fe_(78)Si_9B_(13) Amorphous Thin Ribbons

Investigations are carried on the microstructure,mechanical properties and shielding effectiveness against thermal neutrons,~(60)Co and 137Cs γ rays of Fe78Si9B13 amorphous thin ribbons.Significant differences of microstructure exist between the free face and wheel face.The free face is smooth while the wheel face is coarse with a great amount of micro voids on the surface.The tensile strength and elongation ratio of Fe78Si9B13 amorphous thin ribbons at room temperature are 1400MPa and 3.9%,respectively.The strength descends to a certain extent while the elongation increases obviously with temperature increasing.The thermal neutrons absorption ratio of 4.5mm,4.8mm Fe78Si9B13 amorphous thin ribbons can reach 90.9% and 94.9%;the liner attenuation coefficients of Fe78Si9B13 amorphous thin ribbons against ~(60)Co、137Cs γ rays are 0.28cm-1,0.46cm-1,respectively.The Fe78Si9B13 amorphous thin ribbons possess excellent absorption properties for thermal neutrons and satisfactory attenuation effectiveness against γ rays and can hopefully be applied in radiations shielding systems.
