Research and Development of Yttrium-containing Mg-Al System Magnesium Alloys

Effects of yttrium on microstructure,mechanical properties at room temperature and elevated temperature,cast properties and corrosion resistance of Mg-Al system alloys are reviewed in the paper.Appropriate content of Y can not only refine the microstructure of the matrix and thus form high melting point strengthening phase Al2Y,but can also improve the morphology of β(Mg17Al12)phase,which is beneficial to the improvement of the room temperature properties of magnesium alloys.Solid solution strengthening of Y and dispersion strengthening of Al2Y phases both contribute to the improvement of the properties at room temperature and elevated temperature.Appropriate content of Y can also improve cast properties and corrosion resistance of Mg-Al system alloys,composite additions of Y,Ce,Ca and Nd can also effectively improve its mechanical properties.The existing problems of yttrium-containing Mg-Al system alloys are pointed out and the development prospects are also forecasted.
