Anisotropy of Ceramic Diffusion Enhanced by Microwave Non-thermal Effect

Three pieces of Cr2O3-Al2O3/Al2O3 double-layered pellets were set in microwave chamber in three ways perpendicularly to each other. After specimens were sintered in microwave at 1580℃ for 30 minutes, the tracer Cr3+ ion cross-section of specimens were analyzed by XEDS. The diffusion distances of Cr3+ ion into other side in the direction of microwave oscillations were greater approximately 28% than that in the microwave propagating direction. The anisotropic diffusion was caused by polarized electric field of microwave superimposed on the chemical potential of tracer ion during microwave heating. The intrinsical diffusion in ceramics sped by microwave non-thermal effect was explained through that the microwave field influence on the charged particles. The relationship of diffusion flux in the microwave field JM and heat-driven lattice oscillation diffusion flux Jc was also educed.
