ARC JUMPING AND STREAMING TRANSFER IN THE STEEL WIRE MIG WELDING

There is disagreement on the mechanism of the abrupt transition from globular to streaming mode of metal transfer in steel wire MIG welding. The object of this paper is to study the dynamic process of this abrupt transition with modulating current by high-speed photography and to demonstrate that the transition of these two metal transfers modes depends upon the change of arc shapes. Arc jumping-up phenomenon i.e.a sudden jumping-up of the arc luminious region from the drop surface to the top of the neck is a necessary dynamic process between the two steady metal transfer modas. The marked change in the arc shape after arc jumping gives satisfactory explanation to most phenomena accompanying the transition from globular to streaming mode and the reverse.
