Effect of Ca on microstructure and tensile strength of AZ91 alloys

The AZ91alloys containing calcium have been prepared under the protection of a mixed gas at-mo sphere of SF 6 (10%)and CO 2 (bal.)using commercial stock and the microstructure and mechanical proper-ties also have been investigated.The experimental results show that small amount of calcium addi tion to AZ91alloy resulted in an obvious in crease of tensile strength at both ambient and elevated tem pera tures.Mi crostructural observations revealed that the addition of calcium refined the microstructure and changed the morphology of the matrix phase from dendritic to equiaxed.Calcium addition enhances the thermal sta-bility of theβprecipitates and this is considered to be the most important factor affecting the creep resis-tance of the alloys.
