Aluminum matrix composite with eucryptite particle and aluminum borate whisker

In order to obtain a composite with low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and high stress, a new composite containing β-eucryptite particle which has a negative CTE and aluminum borate whisker (ABO) which has high strength was produced by squeeze casting technique. The microstructure, fracture property and thermal expansion property of the composite were studied. Low thermal expansion and high tensile strength were attained simultaneously in the composite. By changing the volume fraction of β-eucryptite and ABO, the strength and the CTE of the composite can be designed and adjusted.
