Surface treatment of AZ91D magnesium alloy by aluminum diffusion on anodizing film

In order to provide a well adhered,adequate corrosion protection for AZ91D magnesium alloy,a new method was investigated to obtain a composite coating on the alloy by aluminum diffusion after the substrate was anodized.The morphologies,microstructure and corrosion resistance of the coating were also researched.The surface and cross-section morphology of the composite coating were studied by optical microscope and SEM,and the microstructure was measured by X-ray diffusion.The results show that the coating is made up of MgO and intermetallic Mg17Al12 and α-Mg grains surrounded by netlike γ phase(Mg17Al12).Corrosion test results show that the composite coating by anodizing and aluminum diffusion has better corrosion protection for the AZ91D Mg alloy than the single anodizing film.
