Ti-Al intermetallic alloy by spark plasma sintering

Powders of Ti-45Al alloys were synthesized through mechanical alloying (MA) and were then sintered in spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The Ti-45%Al alloys were sintered for a short sintering time of 5 min. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the powders and sintered bulks were studied using SEM, XRD and TEM techniques. The results showed that the amorphous phase generated after powders of Ti and Al were ball milled for 5 hours, and after milling for 20 hours, the elemental powder the mixtures were almost completely transformed into the amorphous phase. The experimental results also showed that with the increasing milling time, the particle sizes of composite powders remarkably decreased, and bulk materials of Ti-45%Al intermetallics with rather high hardness were obtained by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) under the low temperature of 1200 ℃.
