Laser Nitriding of Some Refractory Transition Metals

Surface nitriding of some refractory transition metals Ti, Mo and Ta has been realized by multipulse laser irradiation in nitrogen atmosphere, resulting in the formation of nitride layers, which were analized and characterized with several methods. Laser pulses melt the metal surfaces and activate nitrogen, inducing nitriding reaction in liquid phase. Laser heating and melting and laser-produced transient shock waves together lead to the densification of the microstructure in the surface and sub-surface.
