FE Analyses of Tensile "Y"-shaped, Bamboo-shaped, and Straight Carbon Nanotubes

On the basis of tensile curve of straight carbon nanotube and the “element-death” technology, one nonlinear FE (finite element) method is developed to simulate tensile “Y”-shaped, bamboo-shaped, and straight carbon nanotubes. According to the obtained FE results, mechanical properties of the carbon tubes are compared and analyzed. The study shows that, ①the present FE method is effective for the simulations of tensile nanotubes; ②fracture of “Y”-shaped and bamboo-shaped carbon nanotubes results from the “stress concentration” at the junctures of their thin and thick nanotubes; ③“Y”-shaped and bamboo-shaped carbon nanotubes have obviously lower tensile strength and ductility than straight nanotube has. However, “Y”-shaped, bamboo-shaped and straight carbon nanotubes seem to have no evident difference between their elastic modulus.
