Determination and Analysis on the Early Hydration Activation of the Mineral Admixtures

The early hydration activation of pulverized slag powder, Class C fly ash and Class F fly ash were determined and analyzed systematically by the Environmental Scan Electron Microscope (ESEM) and the TG-DTA. The theory and test results demonstrated that the improvement of the early compressive strength of the paste depends on the hydration rate of mineral admixtures and amount of the hydration resultants. The sedimentation rate of hydration resultants on the surface of the mineral admixtures and the non-evaporable water content of silicate and aluminate hydration resultants were increased with the increase of the activation of the mineral admixture. The early hydration activation decrease with the order of pulverized slag powder, Class C fly ash and Class F fly ash. The composite of Class F fly ash with pulverized slag powder or Class C fly ash would be able to surmount the shortcoming of decreasing the early strength of the concrete when the cement was replaced by the high volume of the Class F fly ash. It is an effective measure to raise the content of Class F fly ash in the high strength concrete and high performance concrete.
