Preparation and Characterization of La_(0.6)Sr_(0.4)Co_(1-y)Fe_yO_3 Cathode Materials

La_(1-x)Sr_xCo_(1-y)Fe_yO_3(LSCF)perovskite-type oxide is an attractive electronic-ionic conductor, characteristic of good chemical stability and catalysis activity, which makes it be a potential candidate for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). In this paper, La_(0.6)Sr_(0.4)Co_(1-y)Fe_yO_3(y=0.2~0.8)cathode materials were prepared by solid state reaction technique, both the structure and preparation process were studied by XRD and TG/DTA. The electrical conductivities of samples were determined by DC four probe technique. Furthermore, thermal expansion coefficients of these compositions were also measured. The results show that the electrical conductivity of these oxides increases to the maximum with increasing temperature then decreases. Analyses indicate that the electrical conduction appears to occur via a small-polaron hopping mechanism. In addition, the other factors (1) the thermally activated disproportionation of Co~(3+) ions into Co~(2+) and Co~(4+) pairs; (2) the ionic compensation of oxygen vacancies formed at high temperatures; (3) Fe~(4+) ions electronic compensation preferential to Co~(4+), contribute to electrical conduction, too.
