Frictional and Mechanical Properties of PTFE Composites Filled with Nano-SiC

Effects of nano-SiC on friction and wear properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were investigated using an MM-200 wear tester.Mechanical performances of PTFE composites were measured.Experimental results show that nano-SiC could reduce wear and increase friction coefficient of PTFE.Furthermore,it also increased hardness but the tensile strength of the composites decreased to some extent.When content is 7% in weight,the wear performance of PTFE composites is optimal.Worn surfaces of nano-SiC filled PTFE composites were observed using a scanning electron microscope.The reasons that the wear of PTFE is decreased are probably that nano-SiC resisted severe mangle of PTFE strip structure,and that film transferred from counterpart surface prevented direct contact between PTFE composites and steel ring.
