Research on Synthesis of High Purity β Sialon Powder From Kaolin

This research is unique in the use of an inexpensive raw material to prepare high purity β sialon powder. Kaolin and carbon with few Fe(NO 3) 3·9H 2O catalyst were wet mixed, dried, and pelletized. Every pellet (1 g,Φ=1.3cm) was heated in nitrogen atmosphere. The mixtures were converted to β Sialon powder by carbothermic reduction and nitridation at relatively low temperatures (1250° 1450°). Phase analysis of products was performed by X ray diffraction method. The present paper describes the rate of reaction of kaolin carbon mixtures as a function of temperature, carbon content, heating time and porosity (%). Although the influence of divers factors is very complex, it′s possible to find the optimum conditions for high purity β Sialon powders of synthesis. The phase transformation during the formation process of β Sialon is also discussed in detail.
