An Analysis on the Reasons for Liquidity Excess of Commercial Banks in China and its Potential Risks

TIAN Su-hua (Department of world Economy,Fudan University,Shanghai 200433,China)
Liquidity excess is a common problem in commercial banks in China, especially in state-owned commercial banks. This phenomenon is fundamentally caused by two aspects: return of China's banks excessively depending on loan and credit business, and restraint of non-interest business.Banks don't have full autonomy to pricing deposit and loan interest rates since Lack of the ability for pricing credit risk.Direct reasons lie on as following: further deepening of commercial banks' share system reform, sustained increase of foreign direct investment and production overcapacity of backbone enterprises. The ongoing liquidity excess in China's finance system will reduce banks profit and deteriorate the formation of capital risk. The solutions are presented as following: to further open commercial banks business, increase the autonomy power of state-owned commercial banks, develop stock market and improve structure of foreign investment.
