Determination of the Trace Cobalt in Zirconium and Its Alloys

The process is as follows: a) The sample is dissociated by hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid, cobalt, in an ammonium citrate medium, is then extracted by 1-Nitroso-2-Naphthol and trichloromethane; b) The resulting organic phase is heated until trichloromethane is evaporated, then the organic substance is dissociated by sulfuric acid and nitric acid, evaporated and dried; c) The residue is dissolved in the mixed acid and cobalt content in the sodium acetate medium is finally determined by 1-Nitroso-2-Hydroxy-3.6-Naphthalene-disulforic acid (sodium salt) photometric method. This method has been successfuly used in determing trace cobalt in the range of 0.0005%—0.0050% in Zr and its alloys.
