Lattice Distortion and the High Pressure Phase in Nanoparticles TiO_2 Induced by High Energy Mechanical Milling

The orthorhombic high pressure-phaseβ-TiO 2 is formed through the high energy ball-milling of C5TiO 2 .High energy me-chanical milling decreases the particles size such that after 40h the sam ple is reduced to 2nm to 4nm dot-shaped particles and 10nm to 35nm petal-shape particles.The lattice constants of C5TiO 2 are changed by the high energy millin g.Such phenomenon of lattice distortion may be connected with the behavior of gra in boundaries.For the infrared abso rption spectra of the milled TiO 2 ,The"blue shift"occurs at the beginning of balling milling.Soon a fter,with increasing ball milling time,t he"red shift"appears.Such"blue shift"and"red shift"are found to be closely related with the v ariation of the lattice constant a.Results also indicated that the photo -catalyst efficiency of TiO 2 becomes poor with increasing ball mi lling time.
