Investigation on the Microstructure of AZ91D Magnesium Alloy after Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment

A nanostructured surface layer was fabricated on a magnesium alloy AZ91D by using a surface mechanical attrition treatment(SMAT)technique.The microstructure along the depth of the treated sample surface layer after SMAT was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscope(TEM)and high-resolution transmission electron microscope(HRTEM).Experimental results show that the deformed layer of about 40 μm is formed after SMAT,the average grain size increases from about 40 nm in the surface layer to about 200 nm at the depth of 40 μm.
