Landfill Leachate Treatment by Fenton Process:Problems Encountered During Scale up from Laboratory Model to Pilot Plant

A statistical model based on bench scale data was applied to a pilot plant to treat landfill leachate by Fenton process.It was found that COD removal efficiencies achieved in the pilot plant were 35.0±2.2%,42.1±1.0% and 50.6±5.6% respectively when three different landfill leachate were treated.In addition,COD removal efficiency was independt of the different optimal operating condintions,which were derived from the model.The results showed that COD removal efficiencies were not only different between different leachate,but also quite different from those predicted from the statistical model.This indicated that the conclusion derived from one kind of leachate could not be applied to other kind of leachate as a result of different leachate characteristics.Low reaction temperature in the pilot plant was another reason that resulted in the different COD removal between the field test and model prediction.
