The Analysis of Valley Trends and Neotectonic Stress Field in North China

The distributin patterns of valley trends, like other geomorphological features, are affected by the interaction of the endogenic and exogenic effects. If a drainage network is solely formed by exogenic erosion, it should be randomly oriented. Actually, however, valley trends in an area present a certain non-randomness, which results from the endogenic effects, the origin of which lies in the plate-tectonics. In order to analyse statistically valley trends, it is necessary to define the river orientation quantitatively. The river orientations have to be 'rectified' (i. e. straigh-tend) by considering them as edges in a graph. The direction of a straight line measured as azimuth N-E is defined as one of river segment and its length taken to "weight". Kohlbeck-Scheidegger formula ,is employed for setting up the statistical distributions of these trends. It is shown that the prefered pole directions of these trends are N33°E and N131°E. These directions can be interpreted as shear lines in a stress field with principal directions N82°E and Nl72°E. The former corresponds closely to the mean compression direction calculated from fault plane solutions of earthquakes and also from surface faults of intensive earthqukes in the area, showing that the valleys of North China can indeed be interpreted as shear phenomena of the neotectonic stress field, which also represents itself in highway network of North China,
