Expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 in mandibular condensability and length contraction

Objective To investigate the expression of TGF-β1 in the contracted area after the the mandibular length is shortened.Methods(1)Eight goats were used in the study.Corti-cotomy at right mandibular angles were performed via extral-oral accession.Special devices were applied to shorten the mandibles by 0.5 mm per three days respectively.(2)Two goats were killed respectively on 0,7,14,28d after the mandibular length was shortened.The contracted areas were harvested and processed for immunohistochemical detection of TGF-β1 existed.Results(1)Mandibular angles of the 8 goats were shorted successfully.(2)The higher expression of TGF-β1 mainly located in fibroblasts,chondroblasts and osteoblasts.The level of TGF-β1 began to climb higher and higher since the end of contraction,reached to the peak after 7d of fixed time and declined gradually from 7d to 14d,and after 28d it became weak.Conclusion The mechanical press might activate a high level expression of TGF-β1 in the contracted zone during contraction osteogenesis,and TGF-β1 appears to play an important role in bone regeneration in the contracted zone.
