Evaluation of Atlantic city's mass transit system (MARTA)

SONG Yan DING Chengri
Being the principal transit operator in the region,Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid T ransit Authority (MARTA) has not been able to actively solve Atlanta's problems in traffic congestion and air pollution. The reasons for the failure of MARTA ar e multifold. Most importantly,Atlanta is characterized by an extreme low densit y across urban landscape. Jobs and population are dispersed across the metropoli tan area. Such type of urban spatial structure is incompatible with mass transit which requires a sizable transit market share. MARTA is an exceptional example describing the relationship between urban spatial form and transportation choice s. Specifically, the performance of MARTA indicates that a full understanding of the region's urban spatial structure should be a prerequisite of developing an appropriate transportation strategy for the area.
