The effect of size on tests by large direct shear apparatus

ZHOU Zhi gang LI Wen sheng SONG Qin de (Highway and Bridge Eng. Dept., Changsha Comm. Univ., Changsha 410076, China)  
Based on the results of tests, the effects of the size of large direct shear apparatus are analysed through axial symmetrical finite element method. The results show that the frictions caused by the wall of shear box will influence the distributions of stresses in specimens and the normal pressure stresses on the shear plane. The influences of frictions should be eliminated during tests through large direct shear apparatus.
