STUDY ON NITRATE REDUCTASE ACTIVITY AS A BIOCHEMICAL CRITERION IN PLANT BREEDING

NR is a key enzyme in nitrate assimilation and has a important effect on other metabolic pathway.The response of nitrogen of plant is largely dependent on the level of NR activity.The eultivars suitable for higher level of nitrogen fertilizer had lower NR activity,while those suitable for lwoer level of nitrogen fertilizer had higher NR activity.Such a relation had been found in wheat,rice,corn,cotton and oiltea camellia.It was sug- gested,therefore,that NR activity could be used as a biochemical criterion of nitrogen response in plant breeding.Nitrogen response of lines of wheat or rice appraised by the mean of NR activity analysis was the same as thar appraised by the means of nitrogen fertilizer experiment in feild.NR activity was also in a possitive relation to growth rate of plant.This would be very useful in the selecting a cultivar or line with higher growth rate in forest breeding.NR activity is one of the most important factors which determine the yield and protein content of grain.But.the correlation between NR activity and yield or protein content of grain had not been found yet. It seemed that other factors,together with NR activity,should be taken into consideration.It had been reported that there were two gene loci involved in the control of NR activity in wheat,barley and corn,one con- trol the synthesis of NR and the other control the decay or stability of NR activity.Two kinds of NR~- mutants,nia and cnx,had been obtained.The results from the analysis of NR genetype of these mutants indicated that NR genes consisted of two parts:NR aproprotein gene and Mo cofactor gene.
