The Study on Growth and Mineral Concentrations in the Xylem Exudate of Grafted Watermelon

Growth trends, yield of xylem exudate and mineral concentrations in the exudatewere investigated in comparison of grafted watermelon plants [Scion: Citrullus lanatus (Th. )M. cv .Xinchen; Rootstock: Lagenaria leucantha Rushy. cv. Nanzheng No. 1 ] and own - rootwatermelon plants. The results showed that the grafted plants developed root earlier and faster.Its ratio of R/T were higher, and yield of xylem exudata increased significantly. In the graftedplants, concentrations of N O3 - N, P, Ca, M g, S in xylem exudate were higher, especiallyN O3 - N, were 105. 0 % and 93. 7% higher at sprouting stage and flowering stage repectivelythan that in the own - root plants. But the concentrations of NH4+ - N and K were lower in thegrafted plants. This result indicated the grafted watermelon plants had different properities ofmineral absorption from the own - root watermelon plant. And fertilization should be different.
