The initial study on bio-protective role of trehalose during preparation and storage of freeze-dried powder of Bifidobacterium longum

Bio-protective role of a new protective additive-trehalose during preparation and storage of freeze-dried powder of Bifidobacterium longum were studied initially. The results indicated that trehalose was most favorable protective additive for the cells survival among four kinds of disaccharide during lyophilization, for instance,the cells survival rate with trehalose was 6 times more than that with surcose;4.5 times more than that with maltose(P0.01);and significantly higher than that with lactose(P0.05). When trehalose was added to four kinds of compound pratective additive,the cells freeze-dried survival rate were all greatly raised (P0.01).The cells stability of freeze-dried powder was improved obviously and the survival period of Bifidobacterium longum was prolonged apparently by trehalose during storage.
