A preliminary study on antagonism of Streptomyces spp. against Curvularia leaf spot of maize

A new leaf spot disease of maize, mainly caused by Curvularia lunata , is becoming an important leaf disease of corn in China. Thirty nine strains of Streptomyces , antagonistic to Verticillum dahliae , were studied for their antagonistic activity against Curvularia lunata. The results indicated that 7 strains of Streptomyces showed strong inhibition against the pathogen, 15 strains Streptomyces spp. had moderate inhibition, 17 strains Streptomyces spp. provided no visible inhibition. The antagonism of strains E17-P and B17-G against the pathogen was equal to or greater than 60% of that of the fungicide controls at 10 -5 concentration . It was also observed that inhibition of strains E17-P ,B17-G, B16-P, B18-P, S3-P, B2-P and B1-GW against Curvularia lunata were more stable than fungicide controls.
