The variation of the amount and total nitrogen content in root system of naked oats at different growth stages was studied with two varieties, Pin-5 (late maturity) and Bayou-1(early maturity). The results showed that, the changes of the root weight of early and late maturing varieties were similar, the dry weight of roots reached their peaks at heading and flowering period and declined gradually thereafter, with the lowest value occurred at grain filling. After grain filling, the dry weights of root increased slowly. With the growth and development of oat plants, the root biomass in 0~30 cm soil layer decreased rapidly, but increased in 30~90 cm soil layer. The trend of the content of total nitrogen was "L" curve with growing processes.
