Treatment of spine fracture with bioactive artificial vertebrae of nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66 in 22 cases

Objective To investigate the restorative efficacy of the spine stability,the vertebral body texture and the height after the treatment with the bioactive artificial nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66(n-HA/PA66)vertebrae for spine fracture patients.Methods From Mar.2003 to May 2007,the 22 spine fracture cases were depressed by anterior approach.Bioactive artificial nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66(n-HA/PA66) were used for bone graft fusion to reestablish vertebral body texture,and fixed by Ti plank.There were 13 male cases and 9 female,aged from 21 to 75(average 41.8).There were 5 cases of cervical fracture,5 thoracic fracture and 12 lumbar fracture.Results All the patients were followed for 6 to 21months(average 15 months).The X-ray film showed that the height of all fractured vertebrae restored and the artificial vertebrae got bone fusion 3 or 4 months after operation.No sinking or other complication occured,and the spine physiologic curve and the internal fixation retained well.According to Fankel grade,nerve function of all cases improved to some degree.Conclusion This bioactive artificial vertebrae with bone graft for the spine fracture is a satisfactory biological vertebra replacement,because it can restore the height and texture of the fractured vertebrae,and get fusion with vertebrae and keep good spine stability.
