Effects of soil crust breaking on soil moisture and growth of degraded Haloxylon ammodendron community

The restoration experiment of degraded Haloxylon ammodendron community was conducted with the Haloxylon ammodendron community established in Minqin County in 1960s.The result showed that the soil crust could be broken to increase the depth of water infiltration,reduce the run-off,increase the soil moisture.The best treatment was 100% crust-removed,and it was followed by the treatment of 50% crust-removed.The effect of water infiltration tends to be greater with the increased precipitation.The branches survival reached 66.67% in the 100% crust-removed treatment and 60% in the 50% crust-removed treatment.The depths of soil crust were 0.22 cm,0.27 cm and 0.38 cm for treatment 1,2 and 3 respectively after the treatment was applied.
