Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Flow Resistance of Automotive Catalytic Converters

The flow resistance of automotive catalytic converter has a significant effect on the performance of catalysts and engines. In this paper, the pressure losses of catalytic converters with various configurations have been measured by a piezometer on a steady flow rig and analyzed in theory. It can be concluded that pressure loss generally increases as cone angle of the diffuser enlarges, but has a reverse relation as the angle exceeds 60°. The declined diffuser has a larger flow resistance than conventional conical diffusers under the same length. The pressure loss of the substrate located in the middle pipe is bigger than that in the top and bottom.
