THE ROLE OF GRAIN BOUNDARY SEGREGATIONS AND HYDROGEN DIFFUSION ON SCC IN 7050 Al ALLOY

SCC in 7050 Al alloy consists of three distinct processes:enhanced hy-drogen penetration along the grain boundaries in underaged and peak agedalloys,charge transfer between Zn(or Mg)segregating solutes with hydro-gen atoms in the dislocation cores and the decohesion produced by the mis-fit H~- ions along the grain boundaries.On this basis,the different suscep-tibility to SCC under different conditions can be well rationalized.The overall grain boundary cracking process is controlled by hydrogendiffusion,the activation energy of SCC is found to be that one for hydro-gen diffusion along the grain boundaries,which is probably a vacancy mig-ration mechanism.
