PHASE MORPHOLOGY CONTROL OF POLYSULFONE-MODIFIED EPOXY RESIN

Phase separation during the curing reaction in a blend of diglycidyI ether of bisphenol A (E51, E39, epoxy). polysulfone (PSF) and diamindiphenylsulfone (DDS, curing agent) was studied.ln the first stage, the mixture was a single-phase system. Phase contrast light micrographs revealedthat when the cure reaction took place at lower,temperature, phase separation occured via spinodaldecompostion. A novel approach to control phase morphology in such a system was presented. Bycontrol the degree of pre-cure reaction, epoxy of different viscosity could be achieved. If a network could be formed in the epoxy-rich phase, the phase separation of the blend could be suppressed when curing.SEM and Fourier-transform Infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that different phase structurescould be achieved by controlling the degree of pre-cure reaction.
