MELT PROCESSED Fe_3Al MATRIX COMPOSITES REINFORCED WITH CERAMIC PARTICLES

SiC, Al2O3 and TiB2 particles reinforced Fe-28Al-5Cr matrix (in atomic fraction) composites have been investigated. The composites were prepared by adding 5% (volume fraction)ceramic particles in molten Fe3Al. The thermodynamical stability of these particles in Fe3Al is different. The stability of Al2O3 is very good, and TiB2 reacted partly, SiC reacted seriously with matrix.Mechanical testing at room and high temperature showed that significant improvements in strength was obtained, the decrease of elongation was not seriously.
