Effects of surface nanocrystallization on the properties of 316L stainless steel

Surface nanocrystallization of 316L stainless steel was realized by using surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT). During SMAT the microstructural evolution, the changes of hardness and corrosion properties in 0.5 mol/L NaCI solution were analyzed. Experimental results show that partial austenite nanocrystallines transformed gradually to mastensite with the increment of the treatment duration. The nanocrystallization of surface layer and the mastensite phase can effectively enhance the surface hardness and slightly reduce the surface-roughness. In 0.5 mol/L NaCI solution, the surface of the treated 316L stainless steel is liable to be passivated due to the formation of the nanostructured surface layer, however the passive films are instable and dissoluble. The corrosion resistance of the SMAT sample is lower than that of the original coarse-grained sample.
