Effect of tantalum substitution for titanium in layered perovskite type K_2La_2Ti_3O_(10) photocatalytic property

K_(2-x)La_2Ti_3-xTa_xO_(10)(x=0.1-1.0)were synthesized by high temperature solid state method and characterized by XRD,UV-VIS and BET.The influence of substitution of Ta~(5+) for Ti~(4+) in K_2La_2Ti_3O_(10) with a layered perovskite structure had been studied on the photocatalytic decompo- sition of water under UV light irradiation.Both the optical property and photocatalytic activity of K_(2-x)La_2Ti_(3-x)Ta_xO_(10) are varied by the substitution of Ta for Ti.As Ta content increased the band gap and light response range are changed,which have a positive effect on the photocatalytic activity in the water splitting reaction.However,a little amount of Ta covers the surface of particle with increase of Ta content,and the phase transfer from Ruddlesden-Popper to Dion-Jacobson is found when x up to 0.8,which result in lowering the photocatalytic activity.As a result,the highest activity is obtained for K_(1.9)La_2Ti_(2.9)Ta_(0.1)O_(10).
