Effects of Biodiesel Blended Fuel on the Combustion and Emissions of D.I.Diesel Engines

The basic physico-chemical characteristics of biodiesel are presented. Effects of biodiesel blended fuel on D.I. diesel engine combustion and emission are reviewed. Compared with conventional diesel fuel, the biodiesel can significantly reduce emissions of CO, CO_2, SO_2, HC, total particulate, soot and no significant change has been found in engine performance. Further reductions of particulate and NOx can be achieved with following technologies such as EGR, biodiesel emulsion, multiple injections and the particulate filter. As a renewable alternative fuel, the biodiesel blended fuel has become more attractive due to its benefits to the environment.
