EVALUATION OF NUTRITICNAL VALUE OF SAINFOIN AND LUCERNE BY SHEEP AND RABBITS

Lucerne and sainfoin are important ruminant and non-ruminant forages in east Gansu Province in central nothern China.this study was undertaken to determine whetherthese reported differences were important and increase the knowledge of theseforages in this region.The biomass production of sainfoin and lucerne were measured at budding,flowering and maturing stages from 1984 to 1987.Sainfoin produced more biomass than lucerne in the first three years after whic lucerneat flowering was used more efficiently than sainfoin by growing For forages cut at flowering stages,the DM intake and weight gain of the sheep that were feed sainfoin were greater.These findimgs suggent that tannins which occur in sainfoin may have haa role in increasing the efficiency of protein use by the sheep.
