STUDIES ON THE SALT TOLERANCE OF SIXTY-NINE ALFALFA CULTIVARS AND TWO PHYSIOLOGICAL INDICATORS CONCERNING THE TOLERANCE

The salt tolerance of sixty—nine alfalfa cultivars has been studied through the sodium chloride stress test in the seedling stage.The comprehensive appraisal of the salt tolerance of these cultivars was made by the cluster analysis of six variables,i.e.the survival rate,the relative plant height and the relative biomass dry weight of the 0. 3% and 0. 4%(NaCl/soil dry weight)treatments,respectively.The results indicated that the salt tolerance of these sixty—nine cultivars could be divided into three groupes,among them, twenty one are salt tolerant,fourty one are medium salt tolerant,the other eight are salt sensitive.The cell membrance permeability and the free proline accumulation of ten cultivars with different salt tolerance have been studied during the stress.It is revealed that there exists no significant difference between the salt tolerant and the sensitive cultivars in the cell membrance permeability and the free proline accumulation. These two physiological indicators could not be used for evaluating the salt tolerance of the alfalfa cultivars.
