Production characteristics and changes of health protection nutrients in alfalfa in Shanghai

Two varieties of Alfalfa Medicago sativadiffering in fall dormancy (FD) rate, Eureka (FD8) and Derby(FD5), were evaluated in grass yields and health protection nutrient contents in Shanghai October 2001 through October 2003. Results from the field experiments and lab measurements are summarized in the following:1.The total fresh forage grass yield in Derby(FD5)were significantly higher than that in Eureka (FD8).2.The peaks of fresh grass yields of the both varieties were appeared in late spring according to the distribution of grass yields per cutting round year.3.Non-fall-dormancy variety Eureka (FD8) obtained higher yields over fall-dormancy variety Derby(FD5)only under high temperature and high humidity environmental conditions. 4.The yields of first cutting of the year in middle or last 10 days of March were highly related to the duration stage of low temperature and high humidity climate conditions in winter.5.The main effectors influencing the total grass yield round year were the growth and regrowth potentials of the variety under suitable climate conditions.6.The extraction rates of health protection nutrients from alfalfa powder produced in Shanghai were similar to or slightly higher than that in Northwestern China. The leaf protein concentrates and crude polysaccharide contents in both tested varieties varied largely with cuttings and years.
