A First-Step Study on the Phytomass and Dynamics of Saxoul Shrubs in Minqin County Sand Area

Liu Cunqi (Department of Grassland Science,Gansu Agricultural University,Lanzhou,Gansu Province,China)
Saxoul(Haloxylon aramodendron)is one of the shrubs, which possesses the highest phytomass in the desert and semi-desert.Micro-topographyically,especially the state of soil moisture has heavy influence on the dry matter productivity of the shrub. The specific condition of the water supply and demand in saxoul differs from those of the other plants. This is the indispensable condition of the shrub that it establishes and develops itself. In this study, various methods were used to determine the phytomass and all factors affecting saxoul growth were dealt with the quantification method. The result showed that quantification method is somewhat better than other methods;the author suggested here- with that saxoul should be utilized economically and managed properly from the age of 10 to 13 years;it is possible to eastablish saxoul shrub over the wide expanse of the desert semi-desert(with water table 6 to 7 meters deep underground)in Northwest China.
