Effect of exogenous calcium on alleviation of the decreased photosynthetic ability of Helianthus tuberosus leaves under seawater stress

Regulation of calcium ion content on Helianthus tuberosus seedlings under seawater stress was done using various calcium ion concentrations.The effects of calcium ion on SOD activity,MDA content,relative conductivity,net photosynthetic rate(Pn),stomatal conductivity(Gs) and fluorescent parameters were studied to explore their effects on alleviation of the decreased photosynthetic ability of H.tuberosus leaves under seawater stress.Normal metabolism of H.tuberosus was markedly inhibited by 30% seawater stress but addition of Ca2+ alleviated the effects to various degrees,in particular,10 mmol/L Ca2+ markedly protected H.tuberosus leaves from oxidative damage and a higher activity of SOD and lower content of MDA in H.tuberosus leaves were maintained under salt stress.As a result,the increases in status of electron transport by PSⅡ(Fm/F0),primary photochemical efficiency of PSⅡ(Fv/Fm),quantum efficiency of photosystem II(ΦPSⅡ),photochemical quenching coefficient(qP),Pn,Gs and the decrease in non-photochemical quenching coefficient(qNP) were observed under salt stress.All results suggested that addition of Ca2+ compensated the Ca2+ deficiency induced by salt stress,alleviated oxidative damage,maintained normal metabolism and intact cell membranes,balanced the ions absorbed,maintained higher Pn and protected the photosynthetic system.
