Scanning Electron-microscopic Observation on Leaves of Some Plants Species

Shen Yuying (Gansu Grassland Ecological Research Institute, Lanzhou 730020)  
The epidermal systems of leaves from Puccinellia tenuiflora, Hordeum brevisubulatum and Suaeda salsa were examined under a Hitachi S430 scanning electron microscope for determining the structural response of epidermis to NaCl stress. It was observed that the leaves of P. tenuiflora were featured with a ceraceous cover of medium denseness, sunken stomata and the epidermal trichoma which were sparse, but their number increased with an increased salt concentration. The leaves of H. brevisubulatum had sunken stomata also, a ceraceous cover of lesser denseness than that of P. tenuiflora, a density of trichoma on the order of 132~196 per sq. mm. which appeared to be little responsive to an increase in the salt concentration but the appearance of trichoma might be changed. The ceraceous cover on the leaves of S. salsa was dense and the number of stomata was as high as 236 per sq. mm.
