Simulated Complex Alkali-saline Conditions and Their Effects on Growth of Leymus chinensis Seedlings

Thirty different alkali-saline ecological conditions, which evenly covered all the cases within the ranges of 50~350 mmol/L salinity and 7.14~10.81 pH values, were simulated by mixtures of varied proportions of sodium salts of chloride, carbonate, bicarbonate and sulphate. Under these conditions, the physiological indices of survival rate, tillering rate, number of rhizome and relative growth rate were examined for seedlings of Leymus chinensis to determine the effect of alkali-saline factors on the growth of the plant. It was observed that all the indices declined with increased values of salinity and pH, and the combined effect of a high salinity and a high pH was most damaging to the plant, that particularly could be seen in the index of survival rate. Under the conditions with a salinity not more than 125 mmol/L or a pH value not higher than 8.8, all the seedlings were able to survive, while beyond either the above critical value the survival rate of the seedlings would drop dramatically with an increase in either salinity or pH value.
