A Study of Population Regulation of Phragmites communisas a Clonal Plant in Different Ecological Conditions

おhragmites communis is a typical species of clonal plant and its natural population is mainly renewed by the vegetative propagation of rhizomes. In the Songnen Plain in China, the secondary tillers can develop from basic internode buds of the main tillers only when its top is removed. The longest life time of the rhizome is six years. The great mass of rhizomes begin die from the fifth age class. The rhizomes in the sixth age class only take small proportion in the age classes. Accumulation of the dry matter of the rhizomes is more sensitive to the environment variation than its growth and development periods. The all of the rhizome buds are in the dormant state in the first age class. The most active buds are found in the second age class and the number decreases as the the age class increases. The dormant buds in the sixth age class generally lose the germinating power. The rhizomes in the first age class are young age class of growing and developing stage. The second to fourth classes are adult age classes of relative stable stage and the fifth to sixth age classes are old age classes of getting senile and dead stage in the population. The vitality of the bud is not weakening as the age increases. The rhizome buds of old age class still has important place and function for renewing population of Phragmites communis.
