Performance study on direct methanol fuel cell

The performance of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was investigated. 20%Pt-10%Ru/C and 20%Pt/C catalysts were used for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction. I V characteristics of the fuel cell were studied by changing the Nafion and PTFE loadings in methanol anode catalyzed layer. The results showed that effects of Nafion loading were more important to the performance of the fuel cell than that of PTFE. The optimum Nafion loading was 7%. Based on this, MEA performance was improved significantly by brushing Nafion solution on the electrode surface.The open circuit voltage of the single cell was 0.60V and it could sustain a load current density of 30 mA/cm 2 with an output voltage of 0.4V and 106 mA/cm 2 with an output voltage of 0.2V at 60℃ with 1mol/L liquid methanol and air fed cathode at near ambient pressure with a low anode catalyst loading of 0.6 mg/cm 2 of Pt and a low cathode catalyst loading of 1.1mg/cm 2 of Pt.
