Effect of Trace of Boron on Grain Boundary Segregation of Sulfur and Sulfur Induced Intergranular Fracture in High Purity Iron with Sulfur

The segregation of boron and its effect were studied in high purity iron with sulfur of 6×10 -5 mass fraction and were investigated by scanning Auger electron spectroscopy, tensile test at low temperature and SEM observation of fractured surface. The experimental results showed that boron remarkably segregated to grain boundaries of iron, and caused a remarkable decrease of sulfur segregation and a change of fracture mode at low temperatures from intergranular mode to transgranular mode. The reasons for the effect of boron addition were also discussed.
