Though many designers are doubtful of the traditional design method of the main protection scheme for power generators, depending on the concept of protection, the experience of the designer and the habitual configuration of other power stations, they have to use it to design the scheme because the short circuit current in the stator winding is not well understood. The past design method may lead to harmful results in operation. Now, the internal fault analysis software for generators, which has passed the state verification, will contribute to the popularization of a new kind of view and method in the design of the main protection scheme for main electric equipment. The main point of the method is that the performance of main protection schemes and the possible internal faults of generators can be closely connected, and the final configuration scheme can be optimized according to the principle of advantage complementation and comprehensive utilization, which means making best use of the advantages of protection schemes and bypassing their disadvantages. High quality design can be achieved, which is beneficial to the safe operation of the generator, even though more time and efforts are needed in the design process by use of the new design method.
