Influence of Background Wind Shears and Temperature Gradients on the Propagation of Atmospheric Gravity Waves

Group rays of gravity waves propagating in real atmosphere with wind shears and temperature gradients are calculated, using ray tracing method. The results show that when propagating in the same direction as winds, rays of gravity waves with shorter wavelength are likely to be trapped due to strong wind shears, and those with longer wavelength are likely to Penetrate the thermosphere, while being prolonged due to strong wind fields. When propagating against winds, rays of gravity waves with longer wavelength are likely to be reflected with a loop due to strong wind shears ;while those with shorter wavelength are likely to be reflected without loop due to positive temperature gradients as well as strong winds; and those penetrating thermosphere are shortened due to winds blowing against gravity waves.
